Zhang Zhanzhan

A contemporary artist born in Hebei in 1982 and a graduate of Nanjing University of the Arts, Zhang Zhanzhan has participated in numerous art exhibitions and fairs, with his works collected by renowned collectors and celebrities. His creations often explore the theme of loneliness, using minimalist, soft lines, a distinctive red-and-black palette, and endearing yet silent animal figures to convey his ideas. His works portray both the feeling of loneliness and the universal human condition in contemporary society, prompting viewers to reflect on their relationships with themselves and others.

Showcase of Work

1. Wandering on the Road
A pink rabbit stands with a surface resembling the texture of a knitted toy, softening its hard material with a gentle feel. This contradictory texture makes it both realistic and dreamlike, resilient yet tender. As its name suggests, the rabbit embodies a lone traveler exploring the world—its stance steady yet gentle, exuding a quiet sense of confidence and calmness. It seems to speak of the meaning of wandering: not escape or aimlessness but an endless journey of discovery and growth. Its gaze appears fixed on the horizon, contemplating either an unknown landscape or the start of its next adventure.

  • Observers feel a serene strength emanating from the rabbit, a reminder that, no matter how long the journey, a soft heart and a resilient exterior serve as armor for moving forward. This still sculpture captures the dynamic essence of wandering—going farther while delving deeper within oneself.

2. Don’t Ask About Dreams
This pink rabbit leans casually against a cushion, its long ears hanging down, as if answering an unspoken question from the title: “What is a dream?” It chooses not to answer, suggesting that, at this moment, a dream is neither a distant goal nor an answer but simply the act of pausing to enjoy the present.

  • This sculpture conveys an acceptance of life, encouraging viewers to embrace moments of rest amidst the pursuit of dreams. Through the rabbit, the work reminds us that dreams need not always be grand or far-reaching—they can also be found in the simplicity of stopping, relaxing, and cherishing the present.

3. Special Happiness
The rabbit sits quietly, its ears tilted slightly to one side, with an innocent and focused gaze, as if waiting for something—or perhaps for nothing at all. This "special happiness" comes not from external stimulation but from an inner sense of contentment and peace.

  • The simplicity of the rabbit’s posture conveys a profound truth: happiness need not rely on elaborate reasons. Sometimes, it is found in the quiet of an uneventful afternoon, in the serenity of being undisturbed, or in the pure awareness of ordinary moments. The sculpture invites viewers to pause and redefine their own sense of happiness, reminding them that true joy often lies in life’s small, quiet details.

4. Battling the Waves in the Sea
A blue duck with a woven-like texture exudes a unique tactile warmth and resilience. Floating atop imagined waves, it symbolizes the inner struggle and humor-filled perseverance of life’s journey.

  • Observers are drawn to the duck’s silent optimism and courage, finding parallels in their own experiences. Like the duck maintaining its balance amidst turbulent waves, we all navigate life’s uncertainties. This sculpture tenderly reminds viewers to embrace change with courage while savoring the poetry and humor along the way.
