ArtDepot is pleased to announce Monsoon, a solo exhibition by exclusively represented artist Hou Jianan, opening September 27 at its gallery space in Beijing's 798 Art District. The exhibition continues Hou Jianan's inquiry into spectacle and the mechanisms of viewing.

Natural forms layer across the canvas, twisting and spreading, then suddenly still at their tautest, condensing into warm, hard masses. Time stops. Seeing becomes an assent to stillness. The canvas becomes both window and screen.

Light spills from within, from more than one source. Not the light that illuminates objects, but a hidden, reverse light surging from behind them. The distance between viewer and image is cancelled. We are pulled onto the same plane, sharing a single backlight with mountains, clouds, waves. Classical gaze and spectacular passivity both fail; the viewer is drawn into a visual totality.

We long for a monsoon from afar, with its damp touch, its confirmation of the real. Here we face a transparent virtuality. Reality and algorithm seep into each other deep in the image. The viewer finds no foothold, neither inside the window nor outside the screen, suspended between the two.

When reality is repeatedly covered by images, deconstructing the spectacle may awaken another kind of seeing. The monsoon becomes a memory. In the painting, its breath remains: damp, drifting, unsettled. And when we stand before the canvas, we become the place it finally reaches.
